How Do I catch my first bus?
On the day of travel make sure that you are at the bus stop at least five minutes before your bus is due. Make sure you are standing at the right bus stop by checking the bus stop plate to see if the bus you want stops there. If no buses are listed this means that almost all buses will stop there. Make sure that you are standing on the correct side of the road for the direction you wish to travel.
Buses display their destination and service number at the front of the bus.
When you see your bus approaching you must let the driver know that you want to get on. Signal to the driver by stretching out your arm clearly. The bus will not stop unless you do this. In some rural areas where there are no formal bus stops most buses will stop anywhere on the route where it is safe to do so. Just let the driver know that you want to get on by stretching out your arm. This is known as "hail & ride". Many of the newer buses are able to "kneel" at the kerb so that wheelchairs can be wheeled straight on, please ask the driver if you need assistance with this. On most buses you get on at the front of the bus and pay your fare to the driver. Then you find a spare seat, sit down and enjoy your journey. When the bus is full it is good manners to give up your seat for someone who is less able to stand than yourself.
What to do when you want to get off.
The driver will only let you get off the bus at a designated bus stop (unless your bus is a hail & ride). Before your stop approaches let the driver know that you want to get off. On most buses you can do this by pressing the stop button by the seats. However if there is no stop button you should call out to the driver. "next stop please". Remember that the driver will not stop unless he knows that you want to get off. If you do not know where you should get off ask the driver for help. He should be able to let you know when you are approaching your stop. Take care when leaving the bus and remember to take all your belongings with you.
